“You, Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.”. (Psalm 18:28, RSVCE).
Have you ever had this happen to you?
You are struggling with something, and suddenly your confusion clears. It’s as though a sudden shaft of light has appeared, illuminating the darkness that had clouded your mind, that had made your heart so heavy. The burden lifts, even though nothing in your circumstances has changed. But something actually has changed: you. Your wrong way of thinking about the situation in front of you alters. God has somehow entered the equation, and you know that you are not alone, not hopeless and helpless. This challenge, this impediment isn’t going to get the best of you. You have hope.
Suddenly, a way opens for growth, growth which had been stunted by the darkness of wrong thinking, of the enemy’s deceit. Grace has been showered on you unexpectedly, as a sheer gift from above. The wonders of God’s grace are amazing, and you rejoice!
True, this doesn’t happen that often. Many times, we walk by faith and not by sight. Not infrequently, we continue to soldier on in our lives, surrounded by darkness or confusion and weighed down by the dailiness of life’s challenges.
But God is good. He is faithful. Sooner or later, his light will come and I will once again feel at peace in His love. Since I know this, that he is faithful to his promise never to leave or forsake me, perhaps I ought to thank Him even now, in the darkness, before his light penetrates my gloom. This could be my love gift to Him, to keep my lamp burning, even when it’s dark.

Thanks again, Chris for sharing your insights. The image that comes to my mind is a candle illuminating the darkness. It’s amazing how that small flame can bring such clarity to whatever surrounds me in my environment. When we’re in a dark room or emotionally in a dark place, it can be disorienting and we long for some sort of light to calm our anxiety and feel a sense of peace and comfort. God, like the flame of that candle can make all the difference in the world. Candles eventually stop burning but God’s grace and faithfulness are ever lasting.
